Jason Smith’s Nocturnal Opera follows the encounters of the eponymous hero through one night in a house of ghosts in my prizewinning book of the same name, written with the support of an Arts Council England Award.
All the paintings involve interaction with writing through changing layers and glazes and were made by manipulating unstretched canvas into 3D 'maps' of mountains and valleys, where paint was poured and then evaporated before subsequent intervention. All the works involve an interaction in defining forms between chance and intent, between willed and unwilled areas of paint.
The series was first exhibited by the SW1 Gallery London.
