Edgar Stoëbel (real name Teboul Ichoua René) was born in Frendah near Oran in Algeria on 21 December 1909 and died in Paris in December 2001 - Stoëbel being his artist name.
From a very young age he was attracted to music and graphic arts, these two art forms were closely linked throughout his life and gave his art this musical and rhythmic dimension.
"I remember that when I was about 10 years old, I was making drawings and copies of drawings. One day I made a small drawing of a naked woman, and my mother, curious to see what I was doing, came up to me and when she saw my drawing she was shocked that I could make such a drawing at my young age and she slapped me. Women have always been a source of inspiration for me, they are always present in my work."
